Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re no strangers to unpredictable weather -
but summer rainstorms still have a way of surprising us! You might expect sunshine and blue skies for your July or August wedding, but every now and then, the clouds roll in, the umbrellas pop up, and the day takes on an entirely different kind of magic.
One of my favorite weddings ever happened during a summer rainstorm. Guests sat together under a sea of colorful umbrellas during the ceremony, laughing and snuggling close. Later, the bride and groom kicked off their shoes and danced in the rain, grinning from ear to ear. It was pure joy, and the photos? Absolute magic.
Why Summer Rain Can Be a Wedding Gift in Disguise
The most romantic light – Clouds act like a giant softbox, giving your photos that dreamy, glowy light photographers love.
Playful, memorable moments – From twirling under umbrellas to puddle-jumping with your bridal party, rain invites spontaneity.
Cozy, intimate vibes – Guests naturally huddle together, creating beautiful candid moments.
Tips for Making the Best of a Rainy Wedding Day
1. Have clear or colorful umbrellas ready – They look amazing in photos and keep you dry without blocking your face.
2. Be flexible with your timeline – We can adjust portraits around showers and sneak in outdoor moments between raindrops.
3. Embrace the mood – Whether it’s romantic, cozy, or joyfully playful, lean into it. Some of the best shots happen when you stop worrying and just enjoy the moment.
4. Bring a change of shoes – Wet grass + heels = not ideal. A cute pair of rain boots or flats can save the day.
The truth is, you can’t control the weather, but you can control your mindset. A little summer rain might just turn into one of your favorite wedding memories, and you’ll have the photos to prove it.
